Sunday evening saw the Western Bulldogs fall agonizingly short in a game against Essendon that they probably should have won. A touch of extra class from the Bombers and a stunning performance from key forward Jake Carlisle would be the difference in the end, but not before the Dogs gave the Bombers an almighty scare for the second time this season.

North Melbourne 16.12 (108) defeated Hawthorn 13.10 (88)
We should have known.
Defeated by cellar dweller Brisbane last week, it was just like North Melbourne to come up and beat the top placed Hawks on Friday Night Footy. And beat them they did, on the back of 5 goals from Drew Petrie and a dominant aerial performance from Lachie Hansen the Kangaroos ran out 20 point winners over the reigning premiers. Both Kangaroo key forwards found some form, with Aaron Black kicking 3 goals in a display that must have pleased coach Brad Scott.

Essendon 15.11 (101) Defeated Adelaide 14.8 (92)
A withering 7 goal first quarter burst was enough to help Essendon overcome a dogged Adelaide outfit in front of just under 31,000 people at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night. The exceptional start – the Bombers had kicked 7 goals straight to the Crows 2.6 by quarter time – meant the Bombers would lead from start to finish, though they wouldn’t have it all their own way with the Crows pegging that early advantage back to just 9 points by the final siren.
